Overview

The mission of the Southface Energy Institute is to promote environmentally sustainable homes, workplaces and communities through education, advocacy, research and technical assistance.

Since 1978, Southface Energy Institute has earned a national reputation for its education and research in energy, building science and environmental technologies. Southface experts serve on the curriculum committees for international conferences and summits on sustainable design and construction, including the US Green Building Council's LEED(TM) rating system, the Energy and Environmental Building Association (EEBA) and AIA Atlanta Committee on the Environment (COTE). Since 1998 Southface has served as co-host for the annual Greenprints conference with the Georgia Environmental Facilities Authority. Greenprints attracts international attendance and respect as a forum for addressing a whole systems approach to green building, community design, construction ecology and alternative energy.

Serving as the administrative arm of the Atlanta Regional Chapter of the USGBC, Southface hosts a monthly Green Building Roundtable focused on LEED. Southface and other local leaders also gather on a monthly basis for the Sustainable Atlanta Roundtable, where regional development issues are addressed. Southface technical programs include workshops on residential and commercial energy codes and our annual home building school. Audiences have ranged from school age children to energy and building professionals. Southface has received awards for excellence from the U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, American Institute of Architects, American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers, and several community organizations.

The organization operates from the Southface Energy and Environmental Resource Center in Atlanta, GA. The Resource Center, a state-of-the-art demonstration home, also serves as a training center and demonstrates such technologies as geothermal and gas heat pumps, energy efficient construction, porous paving, building products made from recycled materials, solar electric shingles and numerous healthy interior products, such as non-VOC paints.
